Dear Mike Allen...

If your lede begins with "President Bill Clinton says…," you're writing the wrong story.

Love,

Upper Left
And Bill, how can we miss you if you won't go away?

Bill Clinton seems like some sort of genius to so many people still, because his administration was bookended by both Bushes, father and son; each of whom had varying degrees of success - and failure - sending American armed forces into undeclared wars.

How the man once annointed as "Slick Willie" by Paul Greenberg of the Pine Bluff Commercialgot away with completely ignoring the genocide in Rwanda, is itself a lesson in political acumen. Then, to shamelessly apologize on a trip to Africa, a few years later, gives new meaning to that old phrase, "I'm sorry just isn't enough."

But somehow, Bill Clinton got away with it; and many people look back fondly to his years as president, as a time of untrammeled prosperity amidst the growth of the Internet in Sunnyvale, and the building of SUVs by Detroit.

If he's still with us next year, look for him to campaign for Barack Obama's re-election, just to get his own mug out there, as often as he can. Who knows? The old magic might work again.
