Ironically, George Romney reportedly started this tradition, by supplying 12 years of his tax records.
How far back must one show their returns?
One MUST prove, beyond doubt, that they are a US Citizen, BORN in the US, to be President. Too many people form President Obama's life have stated that he was born in Africa, not the US, but then changed their story, or stopped talking about it when things got serious... The documents that have been shown are newly created, not from that time. One must wonder...
