RJ Eskow shares the object of his affection
...I love the way these conservatives say they'd lay down their lives for their country, but if you ask them to pay four pennies on the dollar on six-figure income, that's dictatorship!

This is inciteful and amusing, in that wry way that Mort Sahl had; and from what one hears tell, still does. If you say this joke, out loud, in your mind's eye, you can see Mr. Sahl smiling that little half-smile he'd get. The one that meant, "I've uncovered something you've never had thought, on your own."

His in his early eighties now and not in the best of health (so one reads). It's too bad. We could use someone making light of the times in which we live.

The Great Depression had Will Rogers (up until 1935, when he died in a plane crash with Wiley Post). The Sixties had Mort Sahl.

The Seventies, a decade in which America seemed to have lost its rudder, if not its soul, had Richard Pryor. The Eighties and Nineties had a variety of people; some say Jerry Seinfeld was the heart of the Nineties and maybe so.

But who do we have now? John Stewart comes out swinging sometimes, and so too, Bill Maher. Neither quite has that combination of things that Mort Sahl had, in his prime.

Maybe things have to get worse - God help us - for a totem such as Will Rogers to arise.
