When I spent a summer in Galveston, Texas, back in 1970, an aquaintance I made was a guy (whose name I no longer recall) who had longish hair and worked at an oil refinery. When his hair got to a certain point, his co-workers told him, "If you don't cut that hair, we'll hold you down, paint your balls red and cut your hair."

There were other tales of similar incidents I heard and experienced myself, as I grew my hair out a bit. I can't remember if I'd heard the term "redneck," before spending time in Texas; but I sure did get to understand what it meant.

Not everybody down there is a redneck and some good old boys, are just good, good old boys. But it's a state in which you have to watch your back; and you don't lip off to someone, unless you're ready to fight. Hey, after all, these are people who fought to the last man at the Alamo and had Sam Houston and his soldiers avenge that battle. The term, "You don't mess with Texas" was based in reality - a different reality than up north, but there it is.
