I'll never forget the sight...

...of grown men and women weeping openly on a public sidewalk as they watched the news through the window of a TV store on Lincoln Street in Port Angeles.

I'll never forget why they wept, either.

It was a stunning event. We were sent home from school and our parents wept. Two things we never had happen before. It took weeks for JFK's death to sink in. I'm not sure America ever recovered from the ugliness of the moment.

Listen to "He Was a Friend of Mine" by The Byrds. That song summed up the feelings of most people in the nation, at that time.

Even Walter Cronkite lost his composure. It was a devastating day.
