Me neither, either…

Steve Lopez in the L.A. Times...
Another thing I don't understand is how, if our individual liberties have been stolen, it's possible to stand in a public park and in the name of God call the black president of the United States a liar, a racist and a communist.
Again, me neither.

Hat tip to Gordon.

Moreover, in what other country in the world could someone show up where the leader of said country was speaking, to protest, while wearing a pistol on his or her hip? Or do the same thing, while slinging a rifle from his or her shoulder?

People who think we've lost our rights need to visit Zimbabwe or Myanmar.

Civil liberties being stolen doesn't happen all at once. It is a gradual slide. Today we can call the pres a communist and a racist, but will we be able to call him that tomorrow?

As for me, I don't think this is a republican/Democrat thing - just the inevitable decline of a republic.

It's tomorrow. Let's check..."The president is a communist and a racist."

Yep, we can still call him that. Your point is taken to a degree. I'm big on vigilance myself, but the right wing alarmism is overstated and the threat is misplaced.

And Terry, you don't have to go that far. There are, for instance, laws against blasphemy in many apparently modern western democracies. We're still freer here than anywhere in many substantive ways.

But can we say, "The president used 9/11 as an excuse to start a war on Muslims?" The last time someone did that, the president had him assassinated. And then he had his son assassinated for good measure.
