…and the inevitable good question, via the Heretik at Big Brass Blog.
GEORGE BUSH BROKE Iraq. How much longer will we have to buy it?Of course, we really won't ever "buy" it, exactly, will we? I mean, we're not even keeping up the payments, are we? Because he hasn't just broken Iraq, he's busted the US treasury.
…and the DNC has greetings for Rep. Schmidt…
From this day forward, the Democratic Party will commit to putting up a "Shame on You" billboard in the home district of any Republican who attacks a veteran's service in order to score political points.
The first billboard will go up near Jean Schmidt's district office in Portsmouth, Ohio. The message: "Shame on You, Jean Schmidt: Stop Attacking Veterans. Keep Your Eye on the Ball -- We Need a Real Plan for Iraq".
... are Democratic values.
The vast majority of Americans believe it is immoral to lets kids go hungry. We agree. The other party cuts school lunches (they just can’t seem to leave that one alone.)It's true, you know. Once again, the Democratic party is called on to do the patriotic thing and clean up the mess the corrupt Republican party has made with its free lunch policies and taxpayer rip-offs.
Americans believe it is immoral that not everyone has some kind of health insurance. We agree.
The vast majority of Americans believe that government overreaching into personal and family decisions is wrong. We agree.
Americans believe that it is immoral to leave huge debts to our children and grandchildren. We agree.
Americans believe that using issues to divide us as a country to win elections is bad for America. We will restore America’s sense of community.

Except they didn't really vote us into war. As I recall, that vote authorizing the president to use force against Iraq was analogous to a trade union's strike vote. When negotiations bog down, union leaders often will ask their members for a resolution authorizing a strike. For members to refuse such a vote would cripple their own leadership. But to grant it is not the same as ending negotiations and launching a strike. It is a way of steeling the leadership, giving it a powerful negotiating tool.Unfortunately, some within the Democratic Party itself have fallen into the Rovian trap and allowed some of our candidates and leaders to be described as having voted 'for the war.' It was the basis of the 'flip-flopper' assault launched against John Kerry by the Dean camp, a line that was happily picked up and expanded on by the Bushco™ slander syndicate.
...from Kos.
It's quite telling that our veteran statesmen like Hagel and Murtha are leading the charge to get our troops out of Iraq. Too many others are so busy trying to look and sound "tough" that they can't see that current policy is a disaster needlessly putting our troops in harms' way.And credit where it's due. John Kerry belongs on that list of "our veteran statesmen" showing leadership on withdrawal, too.
Saw Mark Warner on the Charlie Rose show, and I just don't understand the appeal. His brand of neo-Clintonism promises to be as damaging to the fortunes of the Democratic Party, and particularly of its liberal wing, as the original.

Human rights abuses in Iraq are now as bad as they were under Saddam Hussein and are even in danger of eclipsing his record, according to the country's first Prime Minister after the fall of Saddam's regime.Anyone surprised?
'People are doing the same as [in] Saddam's time and worse,' Ayad Allawi told The Observer. 'It is an appropriate comparison. People are remembering the days of Saddam. These were the precise reasons that we fought Saddam and now we are seeing the same things.'

The fact is that we're not going to stay in Iraq until we achieve victory, whatever that means in this context. At most, we'll stay until the American military can take no more.****
So the question isn't whether things will be ugly after American forces leave Iraq. They probably will. The question, instead, is whether it makes sense to keep the war going for another year or two, which is all the time we realistically have.

{A] spokeswoman for the colonel, Danny R. Bubp, said Ms. Schmidt had misconstrued their conversation. No surprise, really, that Jean Schmidt is a liar. No surprise that she'd stoop to demeaning the service of a combat veteran, either. She did it to Paul Hackett, too.
While Mr. Bubp, a Republican member of the Ohio House of Representatives, opposes a quick withdrawal for forces, "he did not mention Congressman Murtha by name nor did he mean to disparage Congressman Murtha," said Karen Tabor, his spokeswoman. "He feels as though the words that Congresswoman Schmidt chose did not represent their conversation."

It disgusts me that a bunch of guys who have never put on the uniform of their country venomously turn their guns on a marine who served his country heroically in Vietnam and has been serving heroically in Congress ever since. And he does it by name...
No matter what J.D. Hayworth says, there is no sterner stuff than the backbone and courage that defines Jack Murtha’s character and conscience. What part of 'band of brothers' don't the chicken hawks understand?****
Dennis Hastert — the Speaker of the House who never served — called Jack Murtha a coward and accused him of wanting to cut and run. Well let me tell you, Jack Murtha wasn’t a coward when he put himself in harm’s way for his country in Vietnam and earned two purple hearts — he was a patriot then, and he is a patriot today.****
Just a day after Dick Cheney, who had 5 deferments from Vietnam, accused Democrats of being unpatriotic — the White House accused Jack Murtha of surrendering. Jack Murtha served 37 years in the Marine Corps. He doesn’t know how to surrender — not to enemy combatants, and not to politicians in Washington who say speaking his conscience is unpatriotic.
Dana Milbank's lede, my emphasis…
In his 37 years in the military, John Murtha won two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star with a Combat "V," and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. As a Democratic congressman from Pennsylvania for the past 31 years, he has been a fierce hawk, championing conflicts in Central America and the Persian Gulf.I don't expect folks like Norm Dicks and Ike Skelton to endorse Murtha's call for immediate withdrawal, at least not without catching their breath and collecting their thoughts. He's set a bold course, one some aren't ready to join him on. It's critical, though, that his colleagues and rank and file Democrats everywhere call bullshit on any attempt by the Republican noise machine to 'swift boat' another American hero. None of his critics, not a single one, has the moral authority to dismiss Murtha's views.
Yesterday, he was called a coward.

Reichert's seat is a prime target of the DCCC, but his aggressive strategy on environmental issues is just what Dems don't want to see. Washington State has a long history of electing environmentally-friendly GOPers, including former Sens. Dan Evans and Slade Gorton, and if Reichert is able to solidify his reputation as an environmentalist, he'll have an easier time defending his seat next year. That reputation as an environmentalist seems to consist of reading the polls and lining up behind Senator Cantwell against ANWR drilling and tankers in Puget Sound. I have to wonder, though, how ardent his environmentalism might be when he's taking votes to deed over federal land for new refineries while giving the President authority to waive Clean Air Act regulations on fuel and fuel additives (remember what happened the last time someone gave Preznit 30something% authority?).

Americans constantly tell me, “What do you think will happen if we pull out of Iraq- those same radicals you fear will take over.” The reality is that most Iraqis don’t like fundamentalists and only want stability- most Iraqis wouldn’t stand for an Iran-influenced Iraq. The American military presence is working hand in hand with Badir, etc. because only together with Iran can they suppress anti-occupation Iraqis all over the country. If and when the Americans leave, their Puppets and militias will have to pack up and return to wherever they came from because without American protection and guidance they don’t stand a chance.Time at last, isn't it, to understand that American withdrawal is a necessary element of Iraqi stability. Whyever we got started, and however we've gone forward, at this point we're clearly making things worse.

1.) Lewis "Scooter" Libby, October 28, 2005Good recaps of three of the newest, biggest Bushco™ busts. My Scandal Scorecard project has fallen victim to the incredible expanding day job (mostly nights, actually, but you get the drift) but many of the situations that made the list have made their way into various courtrooms and administrative hearings with results including various convictions and sanctions. History will certainly note the degree of corruption which has infected virtually every corner of the executive branch under destructionist rule.
Per the New York Times today, "A federal grand jury indicted Mr. Libby on one count of obstruction, two counts of perjury and two of making false statements in the course of an investigation that raised questions about the administration's rationale for going to war against Iraq, how it treats critics and political opponents and whether high White House officials shaded the truth."

Noe, Chairman of President Bush's 2004 re-election campaign in northwest Ohio, and a major fund-raiser for Bush's re-election campaign, was indicted by a federal grand jury on three counts for allegedly laundering money into President Bush’s re-election campaign.
Per the Toledo-Blade newspaper, "The three-count indictment says that beginning in October 2003, Mr. Noe contributed to President Bush’s election campaign 'over and above the limits established by the Federal Election Campaign Act.' The two other counts were for conspiracy and filing false statements.
The indictment alleges Mr. Noe’s actions caused false statements to the Federal Elections Commission and defrauded the United States and that he directed his conduit donors to fill out the false statements. Mr. Noe faces the maximum penalty of five years in prison on each count."
3.) David H. Safavian, October 2005
Per MSNBC, "In October 2005, David H. Safavian, the top procurement official for President Bush, resigned. Three days later, he was arrested and indicted on five felony counts connected to lobbyist Jack Abramoff. At the time the indictment covered, from May 2002 to January 2004, Safavian had been serving as the chief of staff at the General Services Administration. Case pending. "

CBS:
Bush's low job approval is far below that of some of his two-term predecessors at this point in their second terms. In November 1985, President Reagan had a 65 percent approval rating, and Bill Clinton's job approval in November 1997 was 57 percent. This can't be spun as typical second term troubles, unless you think Dick Nixon was a typical second term President.
It has been 845 days since Karl Rove violated his obligations under Standard Form 312 without the White House taking “corrective action.”
Groovy? Cool? Bitchin'?
According to last week’s indictment of Scooter Libby, a person identified as “Official A” held conversations with reporters about Plame’s identity as an undercover CIA operative, information that was classified. News accounts subsequently confirmed that that official was Rove. Under Executive Order 12958, signed by President Clinton in 1995, such a disclosure is grounds for, at a minimum, losing access to classified information.

How did the Bush Administration assemble its case for war against Iraq?Harry's driving the Republicans nuts. Me, I'm just wild about the guy.
Who did Bush Administration officials listen to and who did they ignore?
How did senior Administration officials manipulate or manufacture intelligence presented to the Congress and the American people?
What was the role of the White House Iraq Group or WHIG, a group of senior White House officials tasked with marketing the war and taking down its critics?
How did the Administration coordinate its efforts to attack individuals who dared to challenge the Administration's assertions?
Why has the Administration failed to provide Congress with the documents that will shed light on their misconduct and misstatements?
