I'm biased, of course…
…and proudly so, but I really don't think there's any reason for any Democrat to vote for any Republican nominee for anything. As always, I think the basic criteria for examining a nominee is to first ask 'Is this someone a Democratic President might nominate?', and there's simply no reason to believe that any of Preznit 40%'s nominees could pass that test. I know there are some who fear the appearance of excessive partisanship in that approach, but frankly, many of the problems confronting the Democratic Party today are the result of insufficient partisanship. When people say that they don't know what the Democrats stand for, it's not because Democrats haven't published reams of material outlining basic Democratic principles, but because we too often compromise those principles unnecessarily in an effort to appear 'reasonably' bi-partisan in an arena that requires agressive partisanship.
Still, there will be those for whom partisanship alone is not enough to oppose Harriet Miers elevation to the Supreme Court. For those, I commend this, from conservative columnist David Frum...
In the White House that hero worshipped the president, Miers was distinguished by the intensity of her zeal: She once told me that the president was the most brilliant man she had ever met. (emphasis mine)Sheltered? Foolish? Insane?
Hey, I report, you decide.
An acceptable nominee to the Supreme Court?
Clearly, she's not acceptable to this Democrat, and shouldn't be to any Democrat.
Hat tip to Ezra.
