At any rate, I completely agree with (Steven) Taylor: "In terms of contemporary usage, especially from a political science point of view, the formulation 'we have a republic, not a democracy' is almost nonsense."
Me too.

When you look at that odd thing called the Electoral College, it doesn't seem like nonsense at all.

The United States is the only country that calls itself a "democracy," that has such an abomination; designed by the Founding Fathers to ensure that the rabble never got its way - too often or too much.

Without the Electoral College, President Gore would likely have been a two-term president. Think about that.
